What the auger does
The auger is a hydraulic drill bit that mounts to the front of the mini skid steer and spins a helical flight down into the ground, pulling the spoil up and out as it goes. The result is a clean, round, consistent-depth hole, over and over, with none of the sweat, blisters, and inconsistent depth you get from a hand digger or a two-man gas auger.
In Northeast Florida's packed clay and sandy soil, hand-digging post holes is genuinely miserable and slow. The hydraulic auger on the Bobcat MT-120 drills a typical post hole in seconds, and the machine's weight and hydraulics push through roots and hard layers that stop a handheld auger cold.
